ORIGINAL BRITISH COLLECTION CAMPAIGN BELOW
Books and tea together make perfect sense. We think that's why over 700 backers helped us launch three NovelTea Tins on Kickstarter last year.
What is a NovelTea Tin?
NovelTea Tins draw inspiration from their original book covers, employing independent artists to carefully achieve a handsome balance of historical authenticity and vintage humor. Meanwhile, our organic tea blends are flavored by professional connoisseurs to evoke the delicate, but unequivocal splendor of great literature.
THE BRITISH COLLECTION
This year we need your help to add three new teas to the library. The British Collection reflects on the work of 3 iconic authors, Jane Austen, W. Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, whose contributions to English literature have helped to define storytelling, comment on society and enrich our culture.
- Matcha Do About Nothing
- Oliver Lemon Twist
- Pride and Peppermint
Pride and Peppermint
Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
The Tea is a vivacious blend of organic peppermint and chamomile that will soothe your nerves and liven up the stodgiest occasion.
The Tin’s design is inspired by blue and white transfer ware tea sets, particularly those of the Regency era. The inset portrait of Elizabeth Bennet is a tribute to Hugh Thomson, one of the first ever illustrators of Austen’s books. We've worked hard to mimic his style to make the tin feel authentic and at home in any tea room. Illustrated by Lily Jones.
Oliver Lemon Twist
Inspired by Charles Dickens’ tale of the poor orphan boy, Oliver Twist.
The Tea is an uplifting organic lemon with a ginger kick that will always keep you coming back for more.
The Tin is a tribute to Oliver’s incorruptible goodness and persistence with design inspiration coming from several vintage Dickens publications. It should fit next to any book from the Victorian era. The tin design is a team effort lead by our own Art Director, Jorgen Stovne. It will feature a painted piece of Oliver done by Berkeley artist Trey Barnett.
Matcha Do About Nothing
Inspired by William Shakespeare’s humorous play (on words), Much Ado About Nothing.
The Tea is a high energy matcha with a silky finish befitting of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy.
The Tin is a tribute to the Bard himself with design inspirations coming from all the way back in the year 1632 when Thomas Cotes printed Shakespeare’s Second Folio. The decorations also include thematic elements of the play itself. Illustrated by Pedro Oyarbide.
New Tea Blends
Our tea blends are truly extraordinary and it has been wonderful to hear so much positive feedback from our first customers. We are blessed to continue working with expert tea blender, Beth Johnson.
Pride & Peppermint
Elizabeth Bennet flat out refuses to be passive and so too does this surprisingly caffeine-free tea. Our proud peppermint pricks the mouth and bucks all minty norms with a sweetly rooibos red flare and simultaneously elegant sensation of chamomile.
Ingredients: organic rooibos, organic peppermint, organic chamomile
Oliver Lemon Twist
When luck's got you down, let a proper sip of something zesty fill your lips and all sorts of brave ideas will follow. Oliver's lemon and ginger gang up in your favor to surprise your foes and senses with a twist -- a British tea that's green?
Ingredients: organic green tea, organic ginger root, organic lemon grass, organic lemon myrtle
Matcha Do About Nothing
An energetic performance with a deceptively silky finish.
Ingredients: 100% all natural organic Matcha
New and Improved Tins
We took to heart the great suggestions from customers and shop owners to improve the dimensions of our tins. Now easier to display and organize, our new NovelTea Tins are designed with:
- A more realistic spine
- Unique embossments for each tin now help them dance in the light
- A perforated internal carton to keep your tea and treasures organized
- 40% reduction in tin volume to allow for simpler display and storage
- Improved durability with a stronger construction
- A more air-tight closure on the tea inside
- New tea tin dimensions will be a great fit on any book shelf:
(dimensions might change slightly for the final version to allow for more content.)
8.26 inches tall | 5.5 inches wide | 1.77 inches deep
Each tea tin in the British Collection comes with 15 servings of matching loose leaf tea blend inside.
Tip: If you have a book club, library group, Shakespearean plays or other literature loving fans, consider teaming up for the 'Book Club Special' which offers the best possible price for our tins and it allows you to pick the tins you want most.

How to Help Us!
We have to reach our Kickstarter goal of $50,000 in order to receive any funding. We only charge you once we’ve hit our goal and the Kickstarter is completed.
To pre-order the set, pick any reward on the right hand side. Simple as that. We'll collect your shipping/fulfillment information when this project is complete in early August. If you want to add additional items there will be an opportunity after the Kickstarter concludes.
It also helps to share our Kickstarter campaign with your friends and followers on social media. Find us on social media and tag and follow us.
Why We Need Your Help
We are still a very young business and we have none of the fancy bells and whistles of a traditional startup. We truly depend on Kickstarter for pre-ordering to build our library. We’re asking for your help to bring The British Collection to life. Here are the principal costs we have identified in order to take this next step:
- The new tin shape requires tooling, bulk manufacturing and logistics
- New teas require new blending in a certified facility
- Art costs money, your support pays for the most passionate artists for each book. We pay our artists first, even if our Kickstarter does not succeed.
The Three MuskeTea-ers
This section was supposed to be about us, but instead we’ll take the opportunity to thank our backers from last year that helped make our three first tea tins a reality! Hopefully they will vouch for us!
Additional thanks to the many Janeites who advised us in the making of the Pride and Peppermint tin including:
Rebecca aka lostinlit_becca, Alexis aka dropandgivemenerdy, Fatima aka, JaneToMyAusten, Jena aka lovenliterature, Catie aka CateButler, Rita from All Things Jane Austen, Katie aka ThornfieldHall
... and everyone else that's supported us over the past few months!
- Johnny, Mitch & Jorgen
Illustrators of the British Collection
Lily Jones - Pride and Peppermint
Portfolio & Etsy
The majority of Lily’s work revolves around books and tea. What better artist to work on our NovelTea Tins? She's as good with pen and ink as the brush, which comes in handy when channeling the old masters. Lily works out of her studio in Seattle, WA.
Trey Barnett - Oliver Lemon Twist
Trey Barnett is a fine artist, illustrator, tattooer currently living and working in Berkeley, California. He is strongly influenced by Neo Classical, Impressionist and Modern art.
Pedro Oyarbide - Matcha Do About Nothing
Portfolio & Instagram
You might have seen Pedro's beautiful hand drawn style before as the artist behind the Joker and the Thief Playing Cards. His work is inspired by ornamental drawings, comic books and tattoos to name a few. Originally from Spain, he now resides in Bristol, UK.
The original artists were:
Dietrich Kleffel - Don QuixoTea, The Picture of Earl Grey
A master of pen and ink. Based in Oakland, CA.
Julia Glushchuk - War and Peach, (The 7th Secret Tin)
Incredible watercolor artist from Ukraine.
Shipping & Handling
For our first Kickstarter we provided more than 700 backers with free shipping however the effort and cost to do so was far more than we expected.
Because you really do come first, we paid nearly $20,000 out of our own pockets to fulfill orders in time for the Holiday Season.
Now, one year later and a tad bit wiser, we are asking you, our lovely backers, to pay individual shipping costs.
This is a relatively small cost for each backer, but for a tiny business like ours such costs are enormous.
Depending on the location and number of tins ordered, below are our current shipping cost estimates. We're working on pushing them as far down as possible.
- 1 Tin USA = $9
1 Tin EU = $12
- 3 Tin USA = $12 - $20
3 Tin EU = $24 - $30
- 6/7 Tin USA = $15 - $29
6/7 Tin EU = $35
You do not need to add the shipping charges to your pledge. We'll handle shipping costs after the Kickstarter through BackerKit.
If you want to distribute our product in Europe, we would LOVE to partner up to make these cheaper.
What are the original tins like?
